Hoover Senior Center

The City of Hoover’s Senior Center is open to seniors ages 55 and over.  Hours of operation are Monday through Friday open from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. In conjunction with Hoover New Horizons, the Senior Center’s purpose is to enhance the quality of life for seniors by providing opportunities for involvement in social, recreational and service activities. Members are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of programs and activities.  Some of the activities include games, classes, luncheons, trips, as well as educational and health sessions. 

Facility Amenities
The City of Hoover opened its doors to the Hoover Senior Center in February of 2007.  It is the perfect place to meet others, enjoy a good cup of coffee and participate in activities. The 8,000-square-foot building offers a creative arts room, two multipurpose rooms, a kitchen, a lounge, a large sun room overlooking the city and an auditorium that seats up to 200.

Membership

  • Available to Hoover residents age 55 and older
  • A valid photo id and proof of residency is required (gas, water, power bill)
  • Annual membership fee is $10 per person for Hoover Residents.  This membership provides access to the Senior Center and the Hoover Recreation Center Indoor Track.
  • Some additional fees may apply for special activities

Meal Program

Hoover has teamed up with Jefferson County Office of Senior Services to provide a daily lunch for individuals 60 years and older who are Jefferson County residents. A donation is requested per meal which are available on a first come, first served basis. See our staff for details!

Hoover New Horizons Mission Statement
The mission of the Hoover New Horizons is to enhance the quality of life of the senior citizens of the City of Hoover by providing opportunities for involvement in social, recreation and service activities, and to support the development of projects within the city.

Membership
Hoover New Horizons Members must be Hoover Residents and age 55 and older. To join the Hoover Senior Center they purchase a $10 per person per year membership fee which provides access to the activities of the Hoover Senior Center and general usage of the Hoover Recreation Center. Additional fees may apply for special activities and or events.

Program

Description

Advanced Yoga

Tuesdays and Thursday, led by volunteer Carol Byrd.  Call the Senior Center for times.

Ballroom Lessons

Tuesdays at 1:30 pm – 2:00 PM and open dance until 3:00 PM led by volunteer Sterling Burroughs

Beginner Yoga

Tuesdays at 10 am led by volunteer Carol Byrd

Billiards

Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.  Room may be reserved for classes each month.

Bingo

Second and Fourth Thursday of each month at 12:15 pm

Blood Pressure Checks

Provided by the City of Hoover Fire Department on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 12:15 pm. (dates may vary)

Book Club

Second Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. in cooperation with the Hoover Library

Bridge

Mondays 9:30 am. to 3 pm (taking names for sub-list)

Canasta

Wednesdays at 12 noon

Chess

Club meeting on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m.  Class on Tuesdays at 12 noon

Computer Lab

The computer lab is available to members when classes are not in session

Creative Arts
Fridays from 8:15 – 10:15AM. You will need your own supplies and the class is provided to you through the Parks and Recreation Department.

Crocheting

Thursdays at 2:00 pm. Class is led by a volunteer instructor.  Participants will need to bring their own supplies.

Dulcimer Jam Sessions
1st and 3rd Thursday at 12:15 PM.   Dulcimer music is a type of folk music that uses a four string lap instrument.  Come and go as you please during these sessions and enjoy this one-of- a-kind sound.

Exercise

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:30 am (Beginners)
Monday and Fridays at 9 am and Wednesdays at 8:15 am. (Intermediate / Advanced)

Knit Wits

Mondays 9:30 am to 12 noon. For true beginners or those wishing to brush up on your rusty skills.  This class is graciously taught by volunteer, Francine Pearson.

Line Dancing

Wednesdays at 9:15 am and Thursdays at 2:00 pm.  (donation requested per class)

Lunch Bunch

Lunch Bunch is a fun way to socialize with others by dining out once a month at a variety of restaurants in the area. Please check the newsletter to see dates, places and registration information. Space is limited.

Luncheons

Held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 11 am. This is a gathering for a catered lunch and a program. Reservation required by the Friday prior to the Luncheon by 12 noon. The meeting time / date is subject to change during certain holidays and summer months. Contact the center for details. (Event fee required)

 Majhong Fridays at 2:00 pm. Call first to ensure that instructor will be in attendance.

Ping Pong

Monday through Friday when room is available

Pokeno

First Thursday and third Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Songbirds

A choral group made up of members that perform for various functions in Hoover and surrounding areas. Typically practices and/or performances are held on Wednesdays August through May.

Speakers

Throughout each month there will be a variety of speakers.

 Tai Chi

Mondays at 1:00 PM.  Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that is practiced as a graceful form of exercise and a great way to relieve stress and to improve balance.  This class is led by a volunteer.

TBS Exercise

 Toning, Balance and Strength on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

Watercolor Club

Thursdays at 1 pm. Please supply own materials. No formal instruction provided.

Wii Games

Members can enjoy playing Wii Games. Call for availability.

Entertainment and Social Events
