DON'T FORGET...THANK A VET
Veterans Week Celebration

November 5th – 9th

The City of Hoover will hold its Third Annual Veterans Week Celebration during the week of November 5th - 9th, 2007.  Rear Admiral John T. Natter (U.S. Navy, Retired) is heading up a committee represented by the Hoover Chamber of Commerce, Hoover City Schools, Hoover Police & Fire, Hoover Library, Hoover New Horizons, Hoover Beautification Board, and Hoover City Employees. The theme of this week is “Thank a Veteran”. Celebrations and displays are being planned in the schools and throughout the city. Here’s a highlight of what’s happening:

Hoover Public Library

  • The Library will host a display of military dress & combat uniforms at the theatre level. There will also be a POW/MIA place setting. This collection will be on display the entire week.
  • The Children’s department at the Hoover Library will be giving out small flags and “patriot cookies” to all children who come into the youth department and who come to story time.
  • Children will have a parade throughout the Library.
  • There will be a guest book for our Veterans to sign in the Library. Each child that comes into story time will make a “thank-you” craft to give to the veterans who sign the guest book.
  • There will be special displays of military related books throughout the library.
  • Each veteran will receive a “Proud Veteran” ribbon.
  • Library patrons will receive a “Proud to be an American” bookmark.

Hoover City Schools

  • Each school will have a poster contest and the winning artwork from each school will be on display at the Hoover Library. Each winner will receive a gift certificate for a $100 savings bond from Friends of the Library.
  • Each school is planning a special Veterans Day assembly with guest speakers.

Around the City

  • Police and Fire vehicles will fly door flags & display “Thank a Veteran” magnets all week.
  • City buildings will display banners that salute our veterans.
  • Patriotic bows will be on business & municipal doors.
  • City employees will wear flag stickers and hand out I Love America lollipops to the public.
  • American flags will be on display in municipal buildings and flown along Highway 31 throughout the week.
  • There will be a military vehicle on display at the municipal complex.
  • Hoover New Horizons will host their annual Veterans Day Luncheon honoring those who have served. (Held October 25th)
  • The Beautification Board will host a special display at Aldridge Gardens.
