The City of Hoover will host its 12th annual Arbor Day celebration on Sunday, March 6, 2011 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. This “Celebration of Trees” will take place at Aldridge Botanical Gardens, located at 3530 Lorna Rd in Hoover. Activities will include tree giveaways and plant sales, ISA certified arborist Q&A, children’s learning activities, a formal Arbor Day program and a ceremonial tree planting (donated by Landscape Workshop Inc.) Activities will begin at 2:00 p.m.; the formal Arbor Day program will begin at 3:00 p.m.; and the ceremonial tree planting will follow at 4:00 p.m.
This year’s special guest and Arbor Day keynote speaker will be former, Auburn University head football coach Pat Dye. Coach Dye is the current owner/operator of Quail Hollow Gardens nursery in Auburn, AL. Turning passion into pride and profession, Coach Dye has been involved with the propagation and production of Japanese maple trees since the 1980s. Quail Hollow Gardens now features a world class collection of more than 60 different varieties of Japanese maples, each with personal meaning to Coach Dye. Many of these varieties will be available for sale the day of the Arbor Day program and Coach Dye will be on hand to help prospective buyers select just the right tree for their home or business.
A second special guest at this year’s program will be Wesley Brown of Huntsville, AL. Wesley, a fifth grader, is the 2011 Arbor Day State Poster Contest winner for Alabama and will be on-hand to sign copies of his winning poster – a poster that won against approximately 1,950 entries from 26 schools statewide. CONGRATULATIONS WESLEY!
2011 will mark Hoover’s 12th consecutive year as a Tree City USA and its second year to be named by the Alabama Urban Forestry Association as Alabama’s official Arbor Day City.
