Habitat for Humanity's Home Repair Program is a great way to inspire and engage others to take action in revitalizing communities. The focus is critical repairs of existing homes – one home, one block, one neighborhood at a time. Repairs are related to general poor structural conditions, safety, landscaping and painting, as well as special needs including wheelchair ramps.
Here's how Habitat for Humanity helps if you have qualifying repair needs:
Identifies site and obtains necessary permits Provides tools and materials Provides professional supervision to manage safety and direct volunteers Can accommodate up to 25 volunteers per site Oversees quality control and obtains required inspections Eligibility Requirements:
- Applicants must be 62 years of age or older and/ or be eligible for and receive disability from the government to qualify for this repair program.
- Applicant must provide proof of income qualification (W2, recent pay stubs, SSI letter, etc…); Please note that the income eligibility is based upon 80% of the median income for Jefferson and Shelby County. For 2010 this equates to a maximum gross income of $47,280.
- Applicant must provide proof of homeownership (copy of deed, tax record, etc…)
- Applicant must agree that the use of a volunteer workforce to provide labor for housing repairs is acceptable to the applicant and by signature below the applicant hereby authorizes the use of such volunteer labor on the applicant’s house.
- Residents from the home must actively participate during the repairs.
- Habitat Birmingham does not give preference to applicants based upon the applicant’s race or age. This information is collected for statistical reporting information only.
- The Repair Program is designed to assist homeowners with repairs needed upon their own home. In the event that the homeowner chooses to sell their home within two years of repairs being performed through this program, the homeowner may be responsible for repayment of repair costs at the time of the sale of the home.
