Hoover Fire Department to Participate in the

2010 Fire/EMS Safety, Health and Survival Week

Hoover, Al., June 2010…  The Hoover Fire Department will participate in the 2010 Fire/EMS Safety, Health and Survival Week (Safety Week) during the week of June 20-26, 2019. Safety Week is an event sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF).

This annual event aims to improve firefighter safety and health to give all a better chance of survival in emergencies and in the long-term.  Fire departments across the U.S. and Canada will take time during the week to go over the messages and resources that will help achieve that goal.

“We are looking forward to participating in Safety Week,” said Battalion Chief Rick Patterson.

The theme for Safety Week this year is “Fit for Duty,” which encourages all fire/EMS personnel to focus on health and wellness issues.  With more than 50 percent of fire fighter line-of-duty deaths caused by health and fitness-related issues, it’s imperative that there be a concentrated effort in implementing wellness and fitness programs.

“The Hoover Fire Department is very pro-active in the area of health & safety of our firefighters.  Our department implemented a physical fitness program for our personnel several years ago. We furnish our firefighters with the latest technology in protective clothing and safety equipment in order to do their jobs in the safest manner possible. The fire service by its very nature has an inherent risk that firefighters face on each and every call they answer. With this years focus on wellness and fitness we will be in a better position to face those risks with healthier firefighters due to an improved health and fitness program”.
