EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES (EMS)With the growing responsibilities of the Hoover Fire Department to include Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the need for public education of EMS related activities, this division has become an important part of the Hoover Fire Department. In addition to providing initial response, transport capabilities are availalbe to all persons as needed. All Fire Department Engine and Ladder Companies provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) in addition to our Rescue/Transport units. Hoover is proud to have on staff some of the best paramedics and EMT's in the region, as evidenced by numerous awards at all levels. Approximately 62% of our emergency responses are for EMS and the demand for increased training and expertise keeps us busy in house and working with training institutions to keep our personnel ready for any emergency. We are also involved in research projects and are in communication with EMS leaders throughout the country to maintain our knowledge and capabilities to provide the highest levels of pre-hospital treatment available. Our dispatchers are Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) trained to provide pre-arrival instructions to the caller while we are responding to the scene of the emergency. When a call is recieved, a dispatcher stays on the line with the caller while crews are enroute so to provide the caller with instructions of what to do before we arrive and to relay important information to responding crews to insure the appropriate response. One of our projects is to work with the Birmingham Regional EMS System (BREMSS) and the local hospitals to provide rapid care to persons having heart attacks. All of our units are capable of obtaining a 12-lead EKG to determine if the chest pain patient is having a heart attack and can relay this information to the hospital in a timely manner so that the appropriate resources can be in place when the patient arrives for quick intervention by cardiologists. This time to treatment system has received nationwide attention and is increasing survival rates of heart attack patients. Our units have had this capability for approximately 8 years and have proved the worth of this system many times. Public education training is provided for CPR at our Inverness station.
