The Arbor Day activities for the City of Hoover include the following events:
The Arbor Day Essay Contest - The essay contest is conducted at the 4th Grade level with all elementary schools participating. The Beautification Board reads all the essays and determines the best overall essay and the best for each school. Each essay contest winner receives a cash prize from The Davey Tree Expert Company, a tree identification book from the Hoover Beautification Board and a membership to Aldridge Botanical Gardens from the gardens. See attached article with rules for submission and judging.
Tree Plantings at the Schools - Each of Hoover's 17 schools is encouraged to conduct an Arbor Day program, and this is always climaxed with a tree planting ceremony. The Beautification Board provides a free tree to each school, and attends and assists with each event. See attached article for more information on the 2010 plans and the schools planting schedule.
The Official Arbor Day Celebration at Aldridge Gardens - This year's celebration is on the last Saturday in February, February 27, 2010, and is the conclusion of Hoover's Arbor Day activities. Beginning at 9:00 a.m., local ISA Certified Arborists will give short lectures on subjects designed to provide homeowners with basic tree information. Rick Tibbett of The Davey Tree Expert Company will give instructions on tree fertilization, and John Ingle Tree Service will teach tree pruning. Then at 10:00 a.m., free trees will be available for Hoover residents to take home and plant. (NOTE: supplies of free trees will be limited and will be distributed one to each resident, on a first-come, first-serve basis.) The official program begins at 11:00 a.m. with a welcome, a keynote speaker discussing trees and Arbor Day, the winning Arbor Day essay is read by its author, prizes are presented to all essay winners and a tree donated by Landscape Workshops, Inc. if planted on the grounds of Aldridge Gardens.
