The City of Hoover's Geographical Information Systems were created in 1998 to begin using geographical information to assist city personnel with logistics and spatial data analyses. The new GIS applications enable city employees to access property and address information with the click of a mouse, saving valuable time. This department also provides application support, programming, software design, web design, and custom reports. Our goal is to provide quality support services by customizing solutions to meet demands.

One of the first to experience the time saving benefits of GIS was the city's zoning clerk in the City Clerk's Office. Before GIS, the zoning clerk had to send out important zoning change notices by manually looking up property tax records, which took several hours for each case, then manually preparing the notices to be mailed to Hoover residents. Now, the zoning clerk can use the city's GIS system and click on the computerized map to select the required notices and generate mailing labels within a few minutes.

The city's GIS maps will soon be used to enhance productivity in the realm of public safety. The city is working hard to develop applications for dispatchers and public safety officers to give them information at their fingertips.
