On February 6, 2007, the City of Hoover officially opened the new Hoover Senior Center. The center stands on the hill located behind the Hoover Public Library overlooking the City.  The current facility was transformed from the previous headquarters for the Hoover Public Works Department.

Following extended conversations with the seniors, the current City administration determined the seniors needed their own facility.  After the City Council committed $2 million to the project, construction began in April, 2006.  Less than one year later the center spans more than 8,000 square feet and consists of a computer lab, meeting rooms, screened in porch, gathering areas and an auditorium.

“The City Council recognized there was a great need for our seniors to have a place to gather and feel comfortable,” said Mayor Tony Petelos.  “Now they have somewhere to come play bridge and other games, paint, practice arts and crafts as well as have computer access with internet while enjoying a spectacular view.”

“The vision for this facility was to create a place for our seniors to come and enjoy one another,” said Gary Ivey, Hoover City Council President.  “They can come here and enjoy a wide-array of activities or just stop in for a cup of coffee and read the newspaper.  There is something for everyone.”

The Hoover Parks and Recreation Foundation served a significant role in the development of the new center.  The Foundation raised more than $100,000 to furnish the entire facility.

More than 4,000 square feet was added to the building to create an auditorium to seat 250 people.  The auditorium will be used to host monthly luncheons and special events.

Hoover residents 55 and older are encouraged to purchase a membership to the Senior Center for only $10 per year.  For more information, call the Senior Center at 205-739-6700.
